Death by (Gulp) Blogging?

The New York Times brings it on:
To be sure, there is no official diagnosis of death by blogging, and the premature demise of two people obviously does not qualify as an epidemic. There is also no certainty that the stress of the work contributed to their deaths. But friends and family of the deceased, and fellow information workers, say those deaths have them thinking about the dangers of their work style.
The premise is that the “nonstop strain of producing for a news and information cycle that is as always-on as the Internet” is causing some bloggers to keel over unexpectedly.

The NYT piece is kinda silly, but it’s here.

Saw it and thought, of course, of all of us, those of us who blog without pay. Had to wonder, though, what they are blogging about. I mean, they want to be the first to report things, but when are they doing the actual reporting if they are simply sitting at home at their computers? Is it all just waiting for something to leak from some high-tech company? Are they just waiting for press releases to post and scoff at? I mean, if they're just the first to blog about news that someone else has reported, then who cares?

i saw that, too. i called up my doctor to re-up the cholesterol meds.

pretty silly, as you say. anybody can work themselves to death in any profession. "death by blogging" is probably more appropriate to some poor sod who gets killed because of something he or she wrote.

Never mind blogging - updating my status is stressful enough...
Well, you, Tara. Of course status updates are stressful for you: wasn't it you that only had four bloody minutes to save the world? Even Spiderman would find *that* stressful!

I still don't get what they blog about, if they're just sitting at home all day. But I'm probably hopelessly 20th century.
