Pata Pata, Baby...

For some inexplicable reason, here’s what we’re listening to right now:

Activist and world music goddess Miriam Makeba recorded this version of “Pata, Pata” in 1968. It looks an awful lot as The Ed Sullivan Show would have looked... had it been shot in San Paulo in the sun. (Which it was not.)

I don’t know what it is about this song that’s so magic, though it might be relief from the bleak grays that surround me right now. It seems as though it hasn’t stopped raining where I am for a couple of months, and snow threatens every week or so (though it never seems to materialize.) But when Makeba sings this song, it’s warm, instantly. And it reassures you that the sun is shining. Somewhere.
