Still Standing
In case you’ve heard stuff and wondered, I haven’t been swept away. Yet. Though, if you’re an alarmist and you listen to the news, you’d realize it could happen at any time.
I hadn’t been listening to the news. Not local anyway. I’ve been glued to the DNC for the last few days, thus the first I heard about an earthquake very near my home was when a friend in Ohio e-mailed to make sure I was OK. I was. I am. Though now that I’ve gone poking, I’ve discovered there have been 18 (18!) earthquakes off the coast of British Columbia over the last week. From AP:

A strong earthquake struck off Canada’s west coast early today near Vancouver Island. There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.Zoiks! So now what do I do? Beyond making sure there are plenty of doorways to stand under, I mean. And we’re used to power failures. And we always have plenty of fresh water on hand. (Totally aside from the fact that we live in a rain forest, I mean.) Nothing is shaking and the house continues to stand. I guess I’ll take a deep breath and move forward. I don’t actually anticipate getting shaken off the planet any time soon.
The magnitude-6.1 quake hit at 5:37 a.m. Its epicenter was 97 miles west of Port Hardy and 293 miles west northwest of Vancouver, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It struck at a depth of 6.2 miles.

And as one who used to live on a Gulf Island, well... Do you have a boat? I think being in the Lower Mainland would be disaster if there was every something serious. You're probably safer where you are.
No boat, but lots of supplies on hand. And I probably *am* safer where I am: when I'm here! (Sometimes I'm not!)
The earthquake was 6.1, but way under the ocean. We didn't feel anything at all. I hope it stays that way!
Personally, I like Obama.
I've been glued to the DNC. Did you see Lilly Ledbetter? God, if we don't elect Obama I will be embarrassed for the US in the face of the world.
