Emerging From Under A Favicon Rock

I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit it, but the whole favicon thing somehow got away from me.

I’m not quite sure how it happened. I mean, I saw them happen, but I guess I wasn’t paying attention or something. And in the part of my brain that was paying attention, I knew I wanted one, but I didn’t put a lot of energy into thinking about how.

For those among you who have been suffering under the same rock, a favicon is the icon that lives in the URL bar of cooler Web sites and blogs. To see what one is, cast your eyes up to where it says the URL of this blog and note that wee icon at the extreme left. Favicon. And now you have a word for it. I do too.

My favicon was created for me by my friend Ross, the internationally known type designer, who took pity on my un-faviconed state and bestowed this beauty upon me. A brace of poison pens and my initials. How cool is that?

If you want one too, don’t ask Ross, he’s very busy designing fonts for languages that didn’t used to be written down (I’m not making this up. But it might also be secret, so I won’t make a link). But you can fiddle around with one on your own by visiting a plethora of Web sites that will help you do it. Here’s a short list (I don’t have a strong recommendation on this one, as I didn’t actually make mine):

You know, my husband made one of those for somebody else, but not for me.

And that's a new word for me. Favicon. Cool.
Maybe he's making you one in secret, and saving it up for your anniversary or something?

Or maybe he's stumped because you're so amazingly incredible, he's afraid he can't think of anything stupendous enough to do you justice?

Or... maybe you have to give him a noodge!
