Point of Annoyance Number Three
I haven’t done one of these for a while... and I’m only up to three. No good reason for it, either. There are certainly plenty of things in the world that annoy me! I need to jot them down.
Currently, however, I’m on about (off about?) pronunciations. Why do I keep hearing CNN talking heads pronounce the short form of Sport Utility Vehicle with a “shhh” sound? As in “the woman drove her esh-you-vee right through the Burger King.” So, riddle me this: where the hell does the “esh” come from? Am I missing something? Or is that just what I get for watching CNN?
On a somewhat related note, the word is “pict-ture.” It just is. A “pitcher” is something you put wine or perhaps juice in. Maybe, in a pinch, you can use it to decant wine. But you don’t stick it on the wall and look at it. Ditto “mirror.” “Mir” is a space station. “Mirror” has two syllables, dropping one isn’t an available option.
Hmmm… I think I’d better stop now. I’m sounding grumpy and I’m not actually. Though maybe I really should stop watching CNN.
And, by the way, I’m still blogging at Moments in Crime for a few more days. I seem to be on my best behavior, though. At least, I certainly sound less grumpy. Come say “hi.”
